The marmola crab is a crustacean that lives in the coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean, from Guayaquil in southern Ecuador to the Strait of Magellan in Chile. It's a nocturnal species that hides among rocks and sand during the day to avoid predators. At nightfall, it comes out to hunt mollusks, small crustaceans and organic debris. It walks sideways with agility, digs shelters, and is territorial. To grow, it must shed its rigid shell, since the shell doesn't expand with the body, in a process called molting or ecdysis. During this period it remains vulnerable until the new exoskeleton fully hardens. It can also regenerate lost legs or claws with each molt, renewing itself and adapting to survive in its environment.
