The book La ronda ("The Ring") presents Gabriela Mistral's poem "¿En dónde tejemos la ronda?" ("Where Shall We Weave the Ring?") with illustrations by Isabel Hojas. Isabel Hojas draws inspiration from those little paper dolls made by folding and cutting paper, all holding hands together.

Isabel recreates this idea and brings it to life in this poem by Gabriela Mistral, where each child is a landscape, just as the poem says: the sea, the mountains, the forest, and the stones. That geography — or rather, the imagined version of that defining geography — is the basic worldview shared by those of us born and raised in Chile.

The ring stays closed within the book — it's a surprise, since it can be read like a traditional book, or assembled into a ring with the characters facing inward and outward. And so, together, holding hands, the characters appear within the very nature that shapes and forms them. Once closed, the ring forms a circle, a never-ending loop.
